Occupied Germany and Austria 1945-1948
This map shows occupied Germany and Austria 1945-1948.
East Prussia belongs to the annexed areas. Most of the places where my ancestors lived are in that area of East Prussia, which is shown light blue, some of them in the area shown light green.
The light blue areas are territories, which were annexed by Poland 1945. The light green area was annexed by the Soviet Union.
The pink areas are British Zone. We lived in Bad Salzdetfurth. It is in Lower Saxony.
The zone division was so, that the French Zone and the American Zone in Germany and in Austria were connected with each other. The border between Germany and Austria is marked red.
West Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany, consisted of the three zones of the French, the British and the Americans and some people called it therefore Trizonesien.
The western border of the Soviet Zone, in Germany, the dark green area, became the Iron Curtain and remained the main dividing line between the West and the East during the existence of the Soviet Union and kept German people apart until the fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November 1989. The ninth of November, a day to remember.
